What is Cows’ Milk Protein Allergy (CMPA)?

Symptoms of CMPA

Recent Guidelines for the Diagnosis and Management of CMPA in Infants

Extensively Hydrolysed formula should be the first choice

Guidelines define a therapeutic formula as one that is tolerated by at least 90% of CMPA infants1. Cow&Gate Pepti First, Cow&Gate Pepti Follow-on and Cow&Gate Pepti Junior meet these criteria.

  • Amino Acid Formulation only indicated where:
    • Child refuses extensively hydrolysed formula (eHF) & accepts Amino acid formula (AAF)
    • Symptoms do not improve on eHF after 2wks
    • Cost benefit ratio favours AAF
  • Infants > 6 months – Diet should not contain CMPA, eggs, soya protein or peanut
  • Dietary counselling maybe needed for patients that do not improve and avoid more allergenic proteins

Food reintroduction and food challenges

Practical advice for mums and HCPs:

  • Be clear about symptoms experienced and foods consumed
  • Follow the diagnostic diet very carefully
  • Always follow this up by a food challenge or re-introduction plan.
  • Based on the final result, ensure that the appropriate food is avoided or re-introduced into the diet as guided by a dietitian.
