Extensively Hydrolysed formula should be the first choice
Guidelines define a therapeutic formula as one that is tolerated by at least 90% of CMPA infants1. Cow&Gate Pepti First, Cow&Gate Pepti Follow-on and Cow&Gate Pepti Junior meet these criteria.
- Amino Acid Formulation only indicated where:
- Child refuses extensively hydrolysed formula (eHF) & accepts Amino acid formula (AAF)
- Symptoms do not improve on eHF after 2wks
- Cost benefit ratio favours AAF
- Infants > 6 months – Diet should not contain CMPA, eggs, soya protein or peanut
- Dietary counselling maybe needed for patients that do not improve and avoid more allergenic proteins
Practical advice for mums and HCPs:
- Be clear about symptoms experienced and foods consumed
- Follow the diagnostic diet very carefully
- Always follow this up by a food challenge or re-introduction plan.
- Based on the final result, ensure that the appropriate food is avoided or re-introduced into the diet as guided by a dietitian.
